radio forecast

tune in from 2-3pm this thursday (or, as always, wait till a bit later and listen whenever you like with the listen again option if you prefer) for bottle rocket radio's 23rd show!

at first, you may find it similar to the other 22 weeks - "hey, this amazing blend of great new music and topical tour-related tracks is awfully familiar" you may declare. "wait, are they still using the theme from jurassic park as their backing music? well, it isn't original, but goshdarn it's a wonderful piece of orchestral loveliness" may also cross your mind. well, we consider this tried-and-tested structure a guarantee of consistency, not repetition. you know what you're gonna get with bottle rocket, and that's jaw-dropping brilliance through and through. yes sirree.

this week's tentative playlist includes more from thomas truax and dananananaykroyd, plus stuff from pelle carlberg and remember remember if the mood so takes us. plus mike will be back to balance out the between-song nonsense-talking. cracking.

yesterday's radio

twas me alone for yesterday's show, and i'd forgotten how distracting it is trying to press buttons and push faders and so on while talking to your own reflection (hence quite a few long-ish tracks to give me time to breathe!) The tracks in question are these:

- Danny and the Juniors - At the Hop
- The Hidden Cameras - Breathe On It
- The Deer Tracks - Yes This Is My Broken Shield
- Southerly - Close to the Crime
- Battles - Atlas
- Wire - One Of Us
- The Bluetones - If...
- Dirty Projectors - No More
- Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele - When You Were Mine
- Frightened Rabbit - Old Old Fashioned
- Pink Mountaintops - Vampire
- Super Furry Animals - Inaugural Trams

listen to it here.

and the joke mike texted in (which i forgot to read out in my haste to include pink mountaintops in the show)? what's the fastest cake in the bakery? scone.

sigh. hopefully the banter will be up to scratch for next week's show!

bottle rocket radio returns to its digi-home

subcity's FM licence may be done for another year, but the radio show certainly aint. we'll be back broadcasting over the interweb from thursday until the end of...actually i'm not sure when exactly. june? whatever, doesn't matter - what's important is the continued broadcast of our superduper show - thursdays, 2-3pm or anytime you bloomin want through the listen again archive.

if you think about it, this is well better than FM - after consulting numerous statistical sources, i estimate there to be a bazillion computers in the world, and all of them could be used to hear us! we're breaking out of the FM-Glasgow ghetto and taking it global! although maybe not in china i suppose, unless the occasional gang of four mentions are mistaken for communist allegiance (see also: andrew wk and his long-running advocation of 'the party').

if you've just read that paragraph and thought 'goodness, he talks a lot of bunkum' i have bad news - it's just me doing the show this week. i'll try and keep the 'rubbish banter/lovely music' seesaw tipped to the latter though, aided by super furry animals, the pink moutaintops, dent may and his magnificent ukulele and dirty projectors.

the radio show today

was quite nice. just listening to it now on this here listen again page and it's lovely, apart from my horrendous attempt at a french accent that somehow became vampirey and rubbish and was probably a sign that i should never, NEVER attempt any more accents on the radio. thank goodness mike was there to salvage things... this is the music that flowed forth from bottle rocket this afternoon:

- Thomas Truax - Wicked Game
- Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
- Peter Bjorn and John - It Don't Move Me
- Je Suis Animal - Fortune Map
- Ballboy - The Time Out Guide

a few sound issues plagued us for this one, not that it stopped us from having a spiffing time and playing spiffing music. we only had one CD deck (i only use CDs out of mortal fear that i won't be able to cue a record properly - yeah, i'm a rubbish dj...) but luckily joe uses a laptop, so we kinda alternated our song choices for the second half of the night. twas a special, post-Obama win celebration too (for yankee Joe particularly), with a fair few barack-supporters cropping up towards the end of the night. mr november was particularly, er, intense - we mostly just yelled along to it loudly, oblivious as to whether anyone else was having fun. fingers crossed you/they were...

BR FM yeah?

just a wee reminder that subcity has just entered week two of its stint on FM (106.6fm). which means that bottle rocket will once again be broadcasting happy-music-waves to glasgow this thursday, 2-3pm. not in glasgow? then you'll be wanting to go here where you can listen live over das internet or listen again whenever your heart desires.

after our movie-themed weeks we'll be back to our usual format this week: some new releases, some previews, some gig-related music, something from a band playing ATP, another vault track, some other stuff that tickles our fancy and a partridge in a pear tree. so if we're savvy and don't forget em, that'll include some franz ferdinand, neko case and lords.
